  • Eighty-six percent of students attending private universities and colleges receive some form of aid (grants, loans, work-study), with the average annual aid package being around $17,000.


  • The first private higher educational institution in the US was Harvard University, founded in 1636.


  • The percentage of minority students enrolled at private universities and colleges is slightly higher than at state four-year institutions: 29 percent at independent and 27 percent at state colleges and universities.


  • The largest single grant ever received by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) was $2.266 million recently awarded by the Wal-Mart Foundation. The grant will help 20 smaller independent colleges develop strategies for improving academic access for (and success of) first-generation college students.
